Consultation and Training

Picture
I have extensive experience developing innovative mental health programs, with a particular focus on evidence-based practices that align with social work practice principles -- humane approaches to mental health treatment and services that value the worth and dignity of the individual,  are person-centered, and that support recovery and self-determination. I value approaches that include collaboration and shared decision-making.

I am a trainer in Family Psychoeducation and Critical Time Intervention, two evidence-based practices that align with clinical social work principles.

I develop curricular materials and training workshops at all levels of instruction -- from teaching direct support workers to graduate students and clinical trainees.  I can assess training needs, and develop custom training programs.

Family Psychoeducation

Family Psychoeducation is a model of care  that has been proven to reduce hospitalizations for people who live with schizophrenia and other serious mental illnesses. It is a collaborative model, that supports all members of a family or a social network in learning about the disorder, improving relationships, and working together to support recovery for the individual.  Family psychoeducation can be provided to individual families, or in multiple family groups. I have provided family psychoeducation in both inpatient and outpatient settings, and have been a trainer in the model with Duke AHEC. I have found the approach to be one of the most beneficial and rewarding interventions in my clinical practice.

Critical Time Intervention

Critical Time Intervention is an intensive care coordination model originally developed to ensure that people with mental illness who experienced homelessness experienced successful transitions to  stable housing. The model has also been used to ensure successful transitions in other areas. From 2012-2015, I led a pilot of CTI in Orange County North Carolina.  In 2016, CTI was added to the array of public mental health services in North Carolina. I have trained with Dan Herman and Sally Conover at the Center for the Advancement of Critical Time Intervention.  I can provide training and consultation on the start up and development of CTI teams.

Coordinated Specialty Care

Coordinated specialty care is a new approach to treating young people with emerging severe mental illness. The model is collaborative, person and family-centered, and has a growing evidence base. In 2005, I helped develop the first specialized early psychosis program in the Southeast, OASIS, based in the UNC Department of Psychiatry. I can provide consultation and training on the development of coordinated specialty care teams.
